Ferns appeared on earth long before the first flowering plants. Early fossil records show that giant tree ferns and cycad palms were the only plants for millions of years and the organic matter from these ferns and cycads accumulated to such a thickness that they deposited in deep layers and, combined with the earth’s heat, compressed into seas of coal, gas and oil.
